How to Pass Your Physician Assistant Training?

Physician assistant (PA) is attractive in that this profession, while bear some similarities with a physician, does not require students to undergo training for four or more years like what a physician must go through. Instead, students will only undergo training for a maximum of three years. Classroom and lab works will be included and a wide range of topics such as microbiology, pharmacology, anatomy, pathophysiology and others will be covered.

This may imply that such course is easier and less rigorous. But is it easy to pass a PA training in comparison to that of a physician’s?

While it is sometimes true that the longer a course takes, the more challenging and difficult it is. But to attach such notion for all academic courses will be a great generalization. Success depends much on internal factors – that is, on the part of students as to whether they exert a commensurable amount of effort to study. That said, it is not the difficulty of the training per se that should be of concern; rather, concern should be on reflecting whether enough effort has been invested on the training.

A PA training entails about 2-year of study of an accredited program at an institution plus a national exam that must be passed in order to obtain the license. In regard to your study at an institution, you should have a proper study plan coupled with good time management. With a well thought plan, you will thus have a guide throughout your journey in studying. Consequently, you can have an idea of, for instance, when you should study for a particular subject or when you should allocate more time for an upcoming test on one topic. With good planning, you can save yourself many hours trying to sort things in proper order, which will jeopardize your potential to succeed in your study.

In addition, you should also be a well read student. Be proactive in searching additional reading materials to supplement classroom learning. By expanding your knowledge base alongside that which is acquired from classroom, you will set a firm foundation to prepare for the certification exam – Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) provided by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). As this exam consists of 360 multiple-choice questions, you should try taking a self-assessment quiz to see how well your fare.

As clinical phase constitute part of your training, it pays to be a little savvy about its requirements. You should hone your communication skills and learn how to relate with people of different personalities. Making patients feel comfortable, explaining procedures and getting medical equipment ready are some of tasks that physician assistants are expected to perform.

As such, mastering this skill will benefit you as you can then show better performance during various assessments in clinical phase, thereby enhancing your potential to pass the training. Moreover, you should also brush up your organization skills as you are expected to take inventory of all medications.
